Bio

(b. 1969, El Paso, Texas)

Armendariz is known for his method of carving into the conceptual landscapes he has painted onto wood panels. He uses a router to draw out the image on wood. Combined with imagery that can be seen as positive and negative, he charges the surface with an energy and thereby commanding your attention. He describes his work as drawing thematic influence from the mystique of the border region—an in-between space about which he poses questions.

Currently a Full Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Armendariz received his BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio (1995) and his MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1999). In 2017 he was the first artist-in-residence at the DoSeum in San Antonio; he has also been an artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado (2018) and Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany (2013).  He has exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, the Dallas Contemporary, the Blue Star Art Center in San Antonio, and Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin. International exhibitions include Liminal Space, DMZ Museum, South Korea (2018); Common Wounds, Bethlehem and Tel Aviv (2005); New Prints, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany (2013); and Texas Contemporary Art, Lalit Kala Academy, National Academy of Art, New Delhi, India (2015). His works are in the permanent collections of the San Antonio Museum of Art, McNay Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, Davis Museum at Wellesley College, Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport Art Collection, and the Cheech Marin Collection, Riverside Art Museum.
