John Valadez is a painter, photographer, and muralist whose career of documenting the Chicano experience spans over 45 years. He was active during the 1970s and 1980s in Chicano art collectives, including Los Four and Centro de Arte Publico. He continues to pursue politically engaged work with his unique and colourful realism.
Valadez studied at East Los Angeles Junior College and earned his BFA at California State University, Long Beach. He has exhibited widely, including his critically acclaimed retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. In 2017, Valadez was honoured with the Vincent and Mary Price Legacy Award from the Vincent Price Art Museum, along with a distant Joan Mitchell Fellowship award. From 2018–2020, Valadez was part of the exhibition Building Bridges in Time of Walls: Chicano/Mexican Art from Los Angeles to Mexico that toured Mexico. His upcoming exhibitions include Traitor, Survivor, Icon: La Malinche and the Conquest of Mexico. Valadez’s work is in public collections including the El Paso Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum.
