Artist’s Statement

Embroidered Tears reflects my Chicana experience in the context of mental health. I am guided by questions framed to understand the ways that art, identity, and healing expand and challenge our capacity to embrace and forgive ourselves. My body carries familiar memories of pain and the missing pieces, too. Embroidered Tears resonates with the power of repetition and solitude through a journey of healing as I revisit points of vulnerability. Through this, I learn to trust that our body knows, even though we may not be able to articulate or intellectualize what it knows.

In all directions of the universe, I forgive those that have harmed me.

In all directions of the universe, I forgive myself for the harm I've caused others.

In all directions of the universe, I forgive myself for the harm that I've caused to my body temple.
