Artist’s Statement

This owl etching by Dennis Martinez symbolizes the spirit or soul of Ultima, a curandera (traditional female healer) who is a central figure in Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima. In this coming-of-age story, Ultima is a woman with spiritual and healing knowledge who guides the young boy Antonio Márez y Luna.
