Rudy Treviño studied art at San Antonio College with noted Chicano painter Mel Casas. He began his career as a commercial art teacher at Lanier High School in San Antonio, Texas, in 1967. This was the same year many Mexican American students walked out of their high schools in Texas and other states to protest systemic discrimination and inferior access to school resources. For over 10 years, Treviño’s students painted murals in the halls of Lanier documenting their experiences; he taught there for 23 years.
Treviño joined Con Safo, an early and significant artist collective in San Antonio in the 1970s. The group’s name referred to Chicano artists who wrote “c/s” or “con safo” on their artwork as a form of cultural copyright. Supporting his passion for music, Treviño also became the co-founder and director of the Tejano Music Awards in 1980 and is the former Executive Director of Texas Talent Musicians Association.
Treviño was the first student to graduate with an MFA in 1976 from University of Texas, San Antonio. He has been many exhibitions, including the ground-breaking 1990 national touring show Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation, 1965–1985.
