Bio

(b. 1935, San Antonio, Texas)

The career of Jose Esquivel spans over 50 years in the graphic and fine arts in San Antonio. The Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, El Movimiento, was a major influence on his early work and provided a direction that continues to this day.  Esquivel was a founding member of El Grupo in 1968 with five other San Antonio artists. El Grupo was one of the earliest Chicano collectives in the country that evolved into Con Safo in 1971. This was a period when Xicanx art was hard to find in public galleries and exhibitions. Jose Esquivel was an important part of the movement to establish Chicano identities, and he continues to push the values of community through his art. His work has been pictured in countless publications and news articles, and his artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
